FUE Transplant

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a method is which individual hair follicles are removed and transplanted to other locations of the scalp.  This option can be desirable to some patients since it leaves a tiny scar about 1mm around.  FUE technique is an alternative to Strip Transplantation.

FUE Candidates

FUE scarring is often preferred by individuals who:

  • Wear short hair styles
  • Notice scalp through the hair when having a longer style
  • Are at risk for thickened donor scars

A FUE transplant allows for faster healing and ability to return to physical activity more quickly.

FUE Limitations

There are limitations to FUE.  The average number of hairs per graft is reduced due to difficulty removing the entire follicular unit.  FUE is more time consuming that strip, limiting the number of grafts to be transplanted in one session creating the need for multiple sessions.  The last consideration is financially FUE is more expensive than strip transplant.

Meeting Your Needs

We offer “gold standard” options to our patients and customize the treatment plan based on individual needs.  Our recommendation is giving after a discussion between the doctor and patient once clarifying the patient’s expectations.  The best harvesting method will be selected for that individual.  Both Strip transplantation and FUE are offered at Vargas Hair Institute.
