Preparation

Once you have scheduled your facial liposuction procedure, you will need to prepare. To help you, Dr. Vargas and her team will provide you with a detailed set of instructions that may direct you to:

  • Avoid Certain Medications: Discontinue using any medications or supplements that may contain blood-thinning ingredients.
  • Coordinate Care: Have a trusted friend or family member transport you home, and if needed, stay with you for the first 24 to 48 hours.
  • Arrange Time Off: Prepare to take time away from your workplace responsibilities and personal commitments.
  • Cease Your Consumption: Abstain from consuming any nicotine or alcohol in the weeks leading up to your procedure.
  • Run Your Errands: Fill prescriptions, gather recovery supplies, and create a comfortable recovery space at home.

Procedure

When you arrive for your procedure, a member of the Vargas Face & Skin Center team will lead you to a private treatment room. They will cleanse your skin before you receive a sedative, but twilight sedation may also be given to anyone who has a low tolerance to pain.

Dr. Vargas will then make incisions near the targeted fat deposits. Often, she makes these beneath the chin or behind the ears. (1) She will inject a tumescent fluid containing epinephrine, lidocaine, and saline to minimize bleeding, enhance your comfort, and swell the fat cells for easier removal. (2) She will then insert a small cannula into the incision and maneuver it to break down the fat. Dr. Vargas will then gently suction the fat from the body, leaving the region more contoured and smooth.

Dr. Vargas will dress the region when she has removed fat and created a desirable sculpt. She typically does not use sutures since the incisions are so small, but she may place them in regions of higher tension.

Recovery

Dr. Vargas performs facial liposuction on an outpatient basis, which means that she will release you from her care shortly after your procedure. She will provide you with written post-operative instructions to guide you through each phase of your recovery.

You can expect some initial swelling, bruising, and post-operative discomfort. These effects will subside with time, but you may manage them with prescribed medications, cold compresses, and resting with your head elevated. You will also wear a compression garment for the week following your procedure, which will limit additional swelling as your tissues heal.

You will be able to return to desk work and other non-strenuous tasks after resting for approximately 1 to 2 weeks. However, you will need to wait several more weeks before returning to anything more arduous. Dr. Vargas will also have you attend follow-up appointments as you heal to monitor your recovery progress.
