Most women are dissatisfied with the lumpy, bumpiness of cellulite that can appear on their thighs and butt areas. And it’s completely understandable. Smooth, bump-free skin is held up as a (perhaps unachievable) standard of beauty in our society. Cellulite is more common in women than men, too, affecting about 90% of women. While not harmful in any way, cellulite can have a big impact on your self-esteem, and may make you feel self-conscious about these areas of your body.
We have many women ask if liposuction or any other cosmetic procedures can get rid of cellulite. The short answer? They can’t. But while getting rid of cellulite can’t be done by cosmetic procedures, you may be able to improve its appearance.
What Causes Cellulite?
Cellulite is a condition in which areas of the skin appear bumpy due to fat deposits under the skin pushing against the connective tissues.
The exact causes of these fatty deposits are not well understood. It is believed that certain hormones – estrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, thyroid hormones and prolactin – have something to do with cellulite. Genetics may also play a role, as they determine your gender, race, metabolic rate, fat distribution and your circulatory system.
Diet and lifestyle may also play a role in cellulite development. Diets that are higher in fats, carbohydrates and salt, and lack sufficient fiber and hydration, can increase your chances for developing it. Those who are overweight have a higher prevalence of cellulite, although those who are thin can also be plagued by it. Smokers, those who are not physically active, or those who stay stationary (either sitting or standing) too long are also at a higher risk.
Why Can’t Laser Liposuction Help?
Laser liposuction is an alternative to traditional liposuction. It contours the body and tightens the skin while melting and removing excess fat, all without the risks or downtime associated with traditional procedures. It is a minimally invasive procedure that uses laser technology to dissolve areas of fat.
This procedure is great for fat removal and tightening, but not as a permanent solution for getting rid of cellulite. It can only temporarily reduce the appearance.
How Can You Improve the Appearance of Cellulite?
There are several things available that promise to get rid of cellulite. Mesotherapy, a process in which vitamins, minerals and enzymes are injected into the body, is supposed to break down the fat in your body. Massage and spa treatments are also touted to do the same. These treatments all produce temporary results and you need repeat procedures to keep the its appearance to a minimum.
Laser treatments are also said to reduce the appearance of cellulite. These treatments are supposed to melt fat, break up fibrous bands and stimulate collagen production. The effectiveness of these treatments is not known.
Creams and other pharmaceuticals – methyloxanthines, amino acids, gingko biloba – as well as compression undergarments that are meant to improve blood and lymph flow are said to help as well. You may also choose to wear looser undergarments, such as boyshorts, to prevent blood flow restriction.
Possibly the best way to improve the appearance of your skin is through diet and exercise. Stick with healthy, low-fat foods and fill your plate with fruits and veggies. Exercise regularly. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. It is also important to keep your stress levels down.
Unfortunately, there is no surefire way to get rid of cellulite. But you can improve its appearance. Weight loss, through a healthy diet and exercise can help.
